Wheels

• Wheels from a motorbike (such as a Honda "postie") are the gold class choice because of their strength. But, they are hard to find and quite pricey.
• Aftermarket wheels are much more available but are apparently not as strong. Commonly they come with "knobby" tyres.

I chose aftermarket wheels. I chose ones that had road style tyres. What I didn't do was pay attention to the axle size that went through it. Mine were 12mm. The other sizes appear to be 15mm and some have 17mm. The bigger the axle the better as there is anecdotal evidence of bent and broken front axles that are on the smaller side (ie 12mm). I will cover in a later post about what I did to overcome this.

Knowing where to start was the difficult bit. So I decided to look around vintage race cars of the era and see what tickled my fancy. I'm into BMW's so when I came across the Stosser that ticked enough boxes to set the dream into action. I'm not saying that's where I'll end up as I really like this De Soto as well:

From there, I read. Read the rules, read what others were doing, read the technical build related stuff which gave me a general overview of what I needed to achieve and that gave me a starting point.

I settled on the following timetable:

1. Source all the parts.
2. Build a chassis.
3. Road test the chassis.
4. The coachwork.
