Hi, and thanks for allowing me to join the forum.

I’ve been interested in cyclekarts ever since i saw them on youtube a few years ago. With retirement coming early next year, I’ll have the opportunity (and hopefully space!) to build one.

At the moment I’m thinking through various inspiration cars and how I can fit them into cyclekart form. Unfortunately (?) all the ones I like are large-displacement straight-8’s or similar from the late 20’s/early 30’s, which makes keeping styling cues difficult. That leads me to ask a few questions:

  • The “Stevenson formula” & CCA manual says wheelbase ~1675mm, with 1700mm seemingly acceptable and >1800mm pushing things into “Aerokart” class. Can I reasonably get away with 1760~1780mm while remaining “standard”?
  • Is there an overall length limit, or “box”, that a standard cyclekart must fit in? I don’t want to end up with something that looks good at 8’3” long if there’s a hard 8’ 2” limit!
  • How feasible is it to squeeze the engine & drivetrain just in front of & over the rear axle? I’ve seen others have done it so I wouldn’t be the first to try, and it’ll be a tight fit, but is it worth aiming for for looks & handling?

I’m sure I’ll have more questions when I eventually get into my build. I’m in Brisbane, kicking myself that I wasn’t aware of the recent Nerang event, and unfortunately won’t be able to get to Leyburn, so hopefully there’ll be other opportunities in SEQld to meet builders & check out cars before I start mine.

Thanks,

Rod.

Hi Rod,

Sorry for the delay in reply.

- Whilst 1675mm is a good guide there is no hard limit and we tend to allow reasonable adaptations. 1760-80mm will be more than fine, whilst still remaining standard.
- Your main limiting factor is the track width which is a maximum of 1m measured centre to centre of the wheels. The length is a lot more loose. Design as you see fit.
- I am sure it will work as long as you can fit it all in. the fun with cyclekarts is that everyone is free to do their own thing. If you can make it work, go for it!!
